Television personality and car collector extraordinaire Jay Leno now holds the quarter-mile world record for a stock production car. The comedian shared the news in a three-minute interview on the CNBC business program The News with Shepard Smith.
Leno, who apparently made the run as part of the next season of his show Jay Leno’s Garage, was able to make the first publicly seen quarter-mile attempt in the production form of Tesla’s upcoming Model S Plaid super sedan. The clip of the actual run is brief, but it shows an NHRA-approved time of a startling 9.247 seconds, just a tenth off the company’s announced ideal quarter-mile time of 9.23 seconds.
