Mazda Win Petit Le Mans in Team’s Final IMSA Race

The final race of Mazda’s current factory IMSA program got off to a rough start. An early mechanical issue put the car three laps down with just under seven hours left in the ten-hour race. In most categories, that could be day over. In IMSA, though, wave-arounds got the car back on the lead lap in the closing hours. Harry Tincknell did everything else.

Tincknell and Action Express Racing’s Felipe Nasr were locked in a tight three way battle with the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura for most of the race’s final 90 minutes. Unfortunately for that MSR team, their Acura suffered a mechanical issue just before what would have been its last scheduled stop and went behind the wall. It left just Nasr’s Cadillac leading Tincknell’s Mazda in the final 35 minutes. Nasr needed less fuel, so he came out with a reasonable lead for the final stint. It closed quickly. With 22 minutes to go, Tincknell made his moved inside of the hard braking zone in turn 7.
