Wanna get weird? Well, have we got a saucy little activity for you! Head on over to the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website, search “skyline,” and—provided you’re doing this sooner rather than later—click the first result. What should come up is a trademark filing for the Skyline name for “vehicles”—but instead of Nissan being listed as the owner, the Ford Motor Company is.
Okay, so browsing the USPTO’s site isn’t the most exciting activity, but it can be revealing, right? In this case, Ford’s apparent ownership of the Skyline name here in America is neither. We don’t know whether Ford is working on a Skyline of its own, or whether it simply grabbed the mark for … some reason. For the record, a Ford spokesperson had only this to say: “We don’t comment on trademark issues.”
For what it’s worth, Nissan still holds the Skyline trademark for toys, the vehicles’ likenesses, and other peripheral commercial aspects, so it seems unlikely Ford will try and use the name for anything cool or video-game-worthy. But you never know. For the full story, check out this article from Motor Trend.
