Nasser Al-Attiyah and co-driver Matthieu Baumel lead the car category of the 2022 Dakar Rally after today’s two-part opening full stage, following up a stage win in yesterday’s prologue. WRC legend Sebastian Loeb and co-driver Fabian Lurquin run second, 12 minutes behind the leader.
Al-Attiyah’s Toyota Gazoo Racing entry is out to a quick lead, but the bigger surprise might be the struggles of other major programs. The highest-ranked entry from the reigning winners at Mini is the #223 of Sebastian Halpern and Bernardo Graue in sixth, already half an hour behind Al-Attiyah. The next-highest ranked Toyota, of Giniel de Villiers and Dennis Murphy, is in seventh. Le Mans winner Romain Dumas is in 28th, over an hour behind the leaders, for Rebellion Racing.
