Not able to afford the near $300,000 price tag Land Rover pinned to its 25-unit run of Defender Works V8 Trophy SUVs? Then maybe the $91,350 2022 Land Rover Defender Trophy Edition ought to fit the bill.
Whereas Land Rover employed classic Defender bones to serve as the basis of the Works V8 Trophy, the British brand uses the modern, 2021 MotorTrend SUV of the Year-winning Defender to create the Trophy Edition. Even so, the more modern model still draws inspiration from the aforementioned Defender Works V8 Trophy, as evidenced by its yellow and black exterior color combination, “Land Rover Trophy” graphics stuck to its front doors, and four-door body style.
Sorry Defender 90 fans, all 220 of the Defender Trophy Editions that Land Rover intends to build start life as $69,350 Defender 110 P400 X-Dynamic SE models, to which the brand adds around five figures worth of optional extras. This includes items such as a front skidplate, off-road tires, mud flaps, a roof ladder, a roof rack, a heated steering wheel, an integrated air compressor, an air suspension system, and a tow hitch receiver. Additionally, the Trophy Edition trades the X-Dynamic SE’s standard 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system for a larger 11.4-inch unit.
For reasons we fail to grasp, the Defender Trophy Edition maintains the P400 X-Dynamic SE’s twin-charged I-6. Although the 395-hp engine is a fine companion for the four-door SUV, as evidenced by the 6.5-second trot to 60 mph we recorded in a 2020 Defender 110, it feels like a missed opportunity that the Defender Works V8 Trophy-inspired Defender Trophy Edition doesn’t feature the 518-hp supercharged V-8 of the new-for-2022 Defender V8.
