2021 Ford F-150 Raptor 37 First Test: Extinction Season Is Over

Hell yeah! New Ford F-150 Raptor, baby! We can’t wait to hit the dunes, trash some trails, and most important, stick it to those pretentious, overbearing Ram 1500 TRX owners. Guess what, Mopar Minions—the Raptor’s got a V-8 now, so in your face. Go pull a street takeover with your Charger buddies or something, and leave the real baja-blasting for us Ford V-8ers.

Wait, wait?

Uh, well. You’re gonna think this is funny. See, we thought “new Raptor” meant “Raptor R. “ Yeah, that’s our bad. This big blue brute is very much the next-gen version of the prior Raptor formula, meaning the familiar 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 and 10-speed automatic transmission are still here. Same 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft, too—not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Don’t worry, the Raptor R is coming, and with it a V-8 to fight the aforementioned Ram TRX on its own turf. So, those who aren’t in dire need of outrageous power in their whoop-walloping supertruck should find the new Raptor fine and dandy, as we sure did. More Monster Energy for thought: There’s a strong chance a TRX Lite with Stellantis’ wonderful naturally aspirated 6.4-liter V-8 is around the corner, and that engine’s 475 horses and 470 lb-ft will provide the perfect foil to this standard R-less Raptor.
