1 Killed, 7 Injured in Pileup During Nurburgring Public Lapping Session

One person was killed in a pile-up crash at the Nurburgring after a Mazda MX-5 Miata struck a tow truck on track Monday evening during a Touristenfahrten public lapping session, multiple local German news outlets reported. Five people were seriously injured and two were left with minor injuries in the incident.

A Porsche 911 GT3 was running at speed on the 12.94-mile Nordschleife course when it began to smoke and pour coolant onto the track surface, a driver who was at the scene told Road & Track. Once the Porsche driver noticed the problem, they pulled off the track onto the grass near Bergwerk corner. By then, a significant amount of coolant was on the track surface, making its way onto the tires and windshields of cars following behind, and leaving drivers struggling to maintain control.

“The Porsche driver pulled over as soon as he noticed what was happening,” a person who was driving behind the GT3 told R&T.

A tow truck arrived to remove the disabled Porsche and other cars involved. That’s when the MX-5 hit the recovery vehicle and ignited into flames, local news reports said. Ten vehicles were reportedly involved in the incident, including a C7 Corvette and two motorcycles, a track regular familiar with the incident said.
